Throwback Thursday: Friends
On this day in 1994: Friends premiered on NBC!
I didn't watch Friends growing up, but I did watch the series finale on May 6, 2004 when I was in high school. The hype was through the roof, and I felt like I would be missing out on some huge cultural zeitgeist (Unfortunately I did miss out on the Seinfeld finale, which actually had higher ratings. Oh well).
Katelyn got me into Friends after we were married, and since then we've worked through the entire show....twice. Since then, I have come to love Friends. The show is endlessly addictive, funny and dramatic at the same time. There were some amazing guest stars over the years, some incredibly sweet subplots, and somehow over ten seasons it manages to maintain a consistently hilarious tone. Overall, it's a fantastic show.
Part of me wishes that recent rumors about a possible reunion show happening had been true, but a bigger part of me is glad they weren't. As Matt Leblanc himself once said, "I don't want to see a forty-year old Joey." It wouldn't be the same. It would be depressing.
I once saw an interview with the creators that Friends is about the time in your life where your friends are your family. It's a time that we all naturally grow out of, and I'm glad that the show left off with that time coming to a symbolic end for the characters.
So while I do sometimes wish there were more episodes, in the end, I guess you could say...
